Alexander the Great was a brilliant general. By outwitting his enemies, he defeated armies much larger than his own. Alexander was only 16 when he joined his father's army. For the rest of his life, he marched from battle to battle.


Directions: After completing the Inspiration timeline, you should have a better understanding of Alexander's Conquests. The following questions will assess your knowledge on those battles. Read the questions, and then type your answers below them.


1. At the age of 21, Alexander had his first battle. What was the name of this battle and how many men were a part of his army?
*Hint- This was the capital of Macedonia.
Alexander left the Macedonian capital with an army of 35,000 men. The battle was named Pella.

2. What did Alexander receive from Persian rulers without a battle?
*Hint- He founded this city and named it after himself.
The Persian rulers of Egypt gave their land and money to Alexander without a fight. Alexander named it Alexanderia.

3. Why was Alexander's army slowing down when they reached this conquest?
*Hint- Alexander burned his share of the loot?
Alexander's army began to move more and more slowly. The treasure they had captured made mountain travel difficult. Alexander finally burned his share of the look and ordered his men to do the same.

4. In order to invade Egypt, Alexander's army had to conquer what city? How did they get to the city?
*Hint- Soldiers hurled molten lead at them from catapults.
Before invading Egypt, Alexander had to conquer Tyre. For seven months the soldiers built a bridge to the walled island.

5. One travel was made difficult by Mother Nature. What city was conquered and destroyed, and what were the travel conditions?
*Hint- Brrr!
Traveling to Persepolis was difficult because the weather below zero making it very cold.

6. Alexander's men reached a point where they could no longer travel. What is the name of that point and what did Alexander do as a consequence for his men's actions?
*Hint- He was 30 when he made this decision.
When Alexander and his men made it to Hyphasis River and couldn't travel, Alexander took them home on a harsh route through the desert.
